Behind the Music

The three songs I have created for this project are influenced by various themes throughout The Outlaw Ocean, but most vividly by the murder at sea story. This story of brutally shooting and killing people at sea and it being captured on video was terrifying and shocking. This story was a perfect example of the lack of law or consequences on the high seas and how that influences human interaction. Humans seem to return to their most basic violent instincts quickly without the constructs of society regulating this behavior. Thus, I have written three songs which reflect various divergent moods. The first, “Hostile Environment” tells the story of a ship being hijacked—the calm before the storm, before the mayhem ensues. “Dream State,” however, evokes the complete opposite mood. Here, I want the listener to feel sensations of warm water, embryonic suspension, and all of the beautiful things I associate with the ocean. Finally, “Strange Blue” is filled with pure panic and dread, telling the story of a rapidly sinking vessel. This track shares the feeling of being on board this vessel as the ocean swallows it, being trapped below the deck. I want to tap into the primal terror that only the sea or space can instill within humans. Music with heavy drums and bass is primarily designed for people to dance to, but what I hope to achieve is to share music that is interesting, engaging and evocative. I want listeners to be able to dance to it, but I also want you to be able to listen to it on your headphones and let the sounds take you on a journey.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
