Behind the Music

We spent a lot of time soaking in and processing all of the materials from Ian’s reporting. For four months, we sat and took the time to listen, read and look through all the files Ian provided, and spent another two immersing ourselves in crafting tracks that tell the story of The Outlaw Ocean through five emotions encountered at five pivotal moments.

What attracted us to this project was the chance to make music for a cause larger than us. Every moment of this process was a learning experience. We had already seen many related reports, but reading Ian’s journalism truly immersed us in the world of The Outlaw Ocean and that is why this project is so important to us. This is an opportunity for Ian’s journalism to expand to another audience, and we hope that our music triggers people to realize the sea is not just a beautiful blue expanse, but a place of great danger, depth and mystery.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
