SEA TALES

Electronic

Behind the Music

One of the most striking things I learned from the book is the extent to which illegal, unethical  practices occur in the world’s oceans and the difficulty with enforcing laws and regulations in such a vast, often lawless environment. The book highlights the human cost of these activities, both for the victims of exploitation and the individuals who engage in these illegal and dangerous practices.

One of the stories that shocked me the most was the account of the rampant use of slave labor in the fishing industry, particularly in South Asia. The book describes how many migrant workers are lured into working on fishing boats under false pretenses only to find themselves trapped on board for months or even years subjected to brutal working conditions and physical abuse.

In an attempt to address topics like this, I think music is a universal language which has the power to transcend cultural barriers and connect people from different countries and backgrounds. It’s a powerful tool for communication and expression. And storytelling can evoke emotions and feelings that are shared by people all around the world.

I believe music is a powerful mechanism of storytelling. Music has the ability to convey emotions, express narratives and tell stories that create a connection with the listeners. The melodies, rhythms, harmonies, and lyrics of a song all contribute to creating a story that is both powerful and memorable. I think I accomplished this, the storytelling of these tales of the sea.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
