Behind the Music

On first listen to some of my previous work, you might think that the music I’ve produced for this music project is a deviation from the music I normally make. And you’d be right because, for the first time in my career, I’m making music inspired by and using material that is raw and real. While the stories of The Outlaw Ocean may feel larger-than-life and cinematic, they are very real. I can’t believe some of what I’ve seen. Some things are traumatic. Some are beautiful. All are very hard to unsee.

As an artist and a person, I live a relatively normal life. I wake up and scroll through social media and see what’s on the news, just like everyone else. Very rarely do we see what happens at sea. Reading The Outlaw Ocean and watching all of Ian’s footage, I was impressed and shocked at how ignorant I’ve been to the lawlessness of the ocean. Ian’s reporting and storytelling is both heartbreaking and eye-opening, and it’s a privilege for me to write music for it.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
