Behind the Music

This project deepened our understanding of how complex the ocean is. The issues that The Outlaw Ocean Project presents go beyond what meets the eye. Before we dove into the reporting, we used to see the ocean simply as a mass of water that sheltered many species. Now we know that that is just the tip of the iceberg to something much more complex. Music is the ultimate storytelling mechanism, but the audio is what makes or breaks that story. We took the opportunity to tell a story with every track.

Fancy Folks
About Fancy Folks

L O R E Fancy Folks is a partnership of treasure hunters called "The Folks," led by The Chef and his brother Imlaylow, two of the greatest explorers ever known. They travel through space to collect data and discover new planets and races all around the universe. Right after founding “The Folks,” they are joined by Loki, a mysterious ancient creature with feline features and an extensive knowledge of the universe. Helping Loki to recover his memory has now become the main mission of the brothers.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
