Behind the Music

I composed this album last summer, while in my seaside Italian hometown. I remember closing my eyes while listening back to tracks, feeling the sea breeze run over me with my feet in the sand and the echo of crashing waves in the background. Creating this album was a freeing experience for me — from following any rules, norms, music styles or trends. Whenever I make music for the dance floor, I follow a few rules and arrangement techniques that help me shape a track in a way that gets people moving and having fun. While people can also certainly dance to this album, the purpose behind it represents an artistic shift.

You can listen to every single track while reading The Outlaw Ocean without losing your concentration, because the motive of these songs is to guide you through a journey and lead the words you’re reading to touch your feelings — making the words and the music unforgettable. That’s part of what makes this project kind of breakthrough, is how it involves a mass of people to tell a story that extends past the words on the page. I’m not a writer. If I want to make people experience something, my music is the perfect vehicle for that expression. I didn’t include any lyrics in my tracks, instead allowing Ian to function as the storyteller while I help guide people through the narrative and feel like they’re part of it.

CASSIMM
About CASSIMM

The CASSIMM project was born in 2012, and he was pleasantly surprised by the success of his first release, “Silent to Me,” since it flew straight to the Top Ten of Beatport Chart and was licensed by Sony Columbia.

What followed were releases on major labels such as Mother Recordings, Snatch! records, DFTD, Glasgow Underground, 303Lovers, NONOSTOP and others, where he's now recognized with a Tech House sound.

CASSIMM is London-based since 2014 and is actually a resident DJ at one of London's most famous clubs, “The Aquarium,” where you can find him every weekend driving the crowd wild .

He’s also performed in clubs such as Ministry of Sound, EGG club, HI Ibiza and Eden Ibiza.

CASSIMM's DJ set is very versatile, and he has the knack for being able to sense the mood of the crowd, and feeding them what they want.

This is the product of many years of being a resident DJ and music lover.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
