Behind the Music

Oftentimes, a feeling of nostalgia is the heart of my music, and I always try to express my emotions and thoughts through sound. I believe that the ocean is a big source of power, both natural and emotional. From water arises a sense of loss and loneliness that perfectly embodies the nature of my music, which is why I did not change anything in my artistic process when making this EP. I incorporated the sound of waves — one of my favorite natural sounds ever — but every melody I created was intuitive. I feel a deep connection to nature, and working on this EP has only strengthened that bond.

When I was living in Japan, staring at the ocean was one of my favorite things to do and it inspired many of the tracks I released. Working on this project gave me a chance to express my memories of the Japanese sea through music. The title of the EP, “Aquakimochi” includes the Japanese word “kimochi,” which means feeling or spirit, and each track title refers to an actual place in Japan. My work on these songs made me realize how music is crucial to storytelling.

About bl00dwave

"bl00dwave is everything, bl00dwave is nothing. bl00dwave is the expression of the nostalgic feelings and the vitalism flowing into your veins." bl00dwave is a musical project run by me, Riccardo Danieli. I have been in the vaporwave scene since 2013. I started with sample-based classic vaporwave tracks and then moved to original productions at the end of 2015. My first original album is called “Distance” and came out in 2016, followed by a more experimental electronic album, “EGO.” In the past few years, I gave myself the freedom to explore new sounds. I conceived my album “Afterglow” while living in Japan (2021).

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
