Behind the Music

I became enamored with The Outlaw Ocean Music Project and the meaning behind it very quickly. Having been born and raised in Hamburg, Germany — surrounded by the atmosphere of the city with the third biggest harbor in Europe — I have a deep connection with maritime life. It’s influenced some of my fondest childhood memories —  memories I hope to pass along to my children. As such, the preservation of the sea is something personal to me.

Music is the key to highlighting and reinforcing deeper emotions, especially when it comes to ideas and topics. My main goal when making music as Ben Walter is to touch people in a way that wakes them up to something important, and I hope these tracks can do the same with the stories of The Outlaw Ocean.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
