Behind the Music

I want this album to convey the difference between common public views of the ocean’s fantastical properties and the brutal experiences that Ian describes at sea in The Outlaw Ocean. Nothing at sea is as cut and dry as it may seem. I wish to weave in some beams of hope to my music to cut through the intensely sad stories described in the book. Thus, I hope that this EP pushes listeners to inform themselves and to go from an "out of sight, out of mind” perspective to one of awareness, change, and action. Ian's reporting highlights many individual stories that bring to life struggles and challenges that most don't think about but that will affect our lives and our childrens’ in the future. I'm hoping that my music will move people physically and emotionally.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
