Behind the Music

Journalists and reporters like Ian function as the eyes of society, pointing out the things many of us don’t see. Similarly, every piece of art can serve as a vehicle of activism — alerting the public to issues that permeate into our ways of life — and music is one of the most impactful ways to create a community through the moments we all live through. I deeply admire Ian’s ingenious idea to invite musicians, as well as listeners, from across the globe to experience this massive project and understand the stories of The Outlaw Ocean.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
