Behind the Music

Music is a great way to bring attention to important causes and help contribute to continued coverage of what’s going on at sea. Journalism is a form of storytelling and music a form of universal communication. To bring the two together presents a rare and unique opportunity to educate the public about what goes on unnoticed in parts of the world where not many people, or even journalists, will go.

Water makes up most of our planet, yet most of the information we receive comes from journalists on land, not on water. To see a project like this bring so much in-depth, first-hand information about what goes on in the ocean was of immediate interest to me. Just as wars and other global events affect life on land, what happens on the water in the form of war against our planet and environment is just as important. Storytelling through music and video will live on to educate and entertain generations after us.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
