Behind the Music

Prior to my involvement with The Outlaw Ocean Music Project, I had no idea that journalism could exist in this way as an artistic experiment for expression. Every component of The Outlaw Ocean reporting — the shots, the sound clips, the lines in the book — leaves you enraptured and pondering. It’s new and something that I think will have a great future.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
