Behind the Music

Just like journalism, music and art have historically played a role of expressing issues in modern society to the general public. Everyone listens to music, and as such, it has the ability to touch a wide range of people. The suspenseful stories of The Outlaw Ocean lend themselves to evocative music that in turn will affect any who listen to it. There are so many facets of The Outlaw Ocean that make it groundbreaking storytelling. From our perspective, no one has ever done anything like this. More than that, no one has shed light on ocean crimes like The Outlaw Ocean has through his book and through this music project.

About Phoenicia

PHOENICIA, is a DJ and producer duo formed by two music lovers from Tunis and Paris; Kais Troudi and Hichem Bouteraa. They started their careers as hip-hop producers. They were behind a project "Rec216,” a hip-hop group in the southern suburbs in 2016. Over time they have become more oriented towards electronic music. Thanks to the internet and through research, the duo learned how to produce techno, and the encouragement of their friends led them to create the project PHOENICIA.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
