Behind the Music

With modern means of transportation, tracking abilities, and technology, I was shocked to learn about the issues raised by The Outlaw Ocean Project, especially the lack of investigative journalists. There is essentially no law on the high seas, and few visit or inhabit them. Abuses are rampant, the weather is hazardous, and the waters are marred by natural disasters.

Ocean crimes have plagued humanity since ancient times and are often beyond the reach of governments. History is filled with stories of notorious criminals running rampant on the seas - traffickers and poachers, pirates and mercenaries, wreck thieves and repo men, shackled slaves and cast-adrift stowaways. Dumping has become a new and unexpected threat in recent years as well. Ships carry toxic waste, nuclear waste, and other hazardous materials and dump them into the depths of the ocean to avoid disposal fees.

To fight against these crimes, we can use music as both a self-defense weapon and a megaphone to the masses. Collective melodies, sound bytes and positive energy can travel far and wide, just as these ocean criminals do. Sampling a journalist's voice for this project only added to my music’s impact. This track was designed to make you stop and think and realize we are not only jointly part of the problem, but we are also very capable of being part of the solution. I hope that this small contribution of music and insight helps further the goal of spreading awareness of these important issues addressed by the project.
