Behind the Music

While reading The Outlaw Ocean, the most shocking realization we had was that we, as a society, have reached a point where only a few situations can shake us up, even in terms of committing a crime. Hearing about murder, abuse, racism, slavery and opportunism of all kinds on the news has become part of everyday life. Who knew that these same crimes also take place in a world that belongs to no one— the ocean— where the perpetrators go unpunished? It’s appalling.

We thought all of the samples we were provided were interesting, especially those that incorporated Ian’s thoughts. Our favorite, though, was this: “The simple fact is that the ocean is as large as it is small.”

We were delighted to be involved in this project and believe that it is a very interesting, new type of reading and listening experience.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
