Behind the Music

As someone from Denmark, a country surrounded by the sea, I care deeply about the health of the oceans. I’ve spent countless hours playing at the beach or walking in the windy months to the sound of rough waves crashing. Thus, I felt especially moved while reading the chapter “Waste Away,” in The Outlaw Ocean. The nostalgia of my fond memories of the sea coupled with the reactions I had in response to this section of the book were on my mind as I developed my tracks. This is the first time in my career I composed and produced music with a specific purpose in mind, and it required me to put much more focus on the messages each melody is sending. With the addition of incorporating ambient noise, I had to experiment and be creative in new ways to ensure all the rhythms and sounds flowed together.

My hope is that The Outlaw Ocean Music Project raises awareness of the environmental challenges we face and the crimes happening on international waters, with my songs contributing to this goal. I want people to have an immersive listening experience that is not only enjoyable, but impactful for each individual. I hope that they walk away feeling as if the music told them a story that they can interpret in their own unique way.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
