Behind the Music

“When Ian told me about the beriberi investigation and after watching the material, I was impacted by the situation that is happening out there in the ocean,” said musician Hernan Cerbello.

Ship crew members are falling ill and dying from the disease called beriberi, resulting from a severe vitamin B1 deficiency, because they’re being compelled to spend longer and longer periods of time – often years – at sea in illegal and intolerable conditions. This practice is facilitated by a popular system called “at-sea trans-shipment,” where ship captains avoid coming to shore and instead offload their catch to refrigeration ships in the middle of the ocean.

Cerbello contemplated the role of his music in the face of beriberi. “In regards to my music, I've been trying to find the textures to provide a piece of music that represents the sorrow of the people, and maybe the fury as well,” explained the artist.

Ship cooks frequently serve cheap rice or noodles with raw or fermented fish on long sea voyages, and they supplement meals with coffee and tea. These ingredients contain high levels of an enzyme called thiaminase, which destroys vitamin B1. An obvious solution would be for ships to provide their crew with vitamin supplements that prevent beriberi and to allow workers to return to shore for medical care if they fall ill, but captains often refuse to carry sick or injured crew back to shore because it is too costly and time-consuming. Consequently, a previously manageable disease can prove fatal at sea.

Cerbello said, “There is no respect for the people who are forced to stay away from their families for such a long time, while at the same time exposing their lives to this treatable disease.”

About Hernan Cerbello

With a solid and consistent sound, Hernan Cerbello has been working in the music industry since 2000. In 2003, his first vinyl release at DK (Matthew Dekay Imprint) won him respect and acclaim. Diving deep into his music, Cerbello played Argentina’s main clubs: Pacha, Crobar and Palacio Alsina. At the same time, he booked venues in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Peru and the US, among others. During this period, Cerbello and his friends formed a collective of DJs named “Feedback Bookings.” The group managed residences and booked international DJs, simultaneously building a big part of the underground music scene in Argentina.

In 2006, Cerbello signed 2 house tracks with Vapourise Records in Australia. One of these tracks, "Summer Emergency," was played by Nic Fanciulli at the BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, which propelled the song to top sales for the summer season. During 2008, Hernan joined Chas Burns, aka “Flow,” and took control over Low Pressings Records, the prestigious UK imprint created by Peace Division. In 2009, Cerbello toured the US and released his now classic EP, "Reach Your Soul" at Anjunadeep. The EP was also included on the mixed CD by James Grant & Jaytech (UK).

In 2011, Cerbello signed the single, "Use Your Imagination" with Armada Music. Around the same time, he developed a relationship with Club On Bookings, a Sao Paulo-based agency. Cerbello soon made Brazil a primary musical destination. Today, Cerbello divides his time between his advertisement production house, Audiobranders, and Low Pressings Records, all the while maintaining his production work and remixing duties.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
