Behind the Music

The thrilling stories of Sea Shepherd chasing the Thunder, the obscure tales of Sealand and the heart-wrenching accounts from the stowaways have already moved me beyond comprehension. These narratives painted a clear image of the larger-than-life landscape of the ocean and how surreal it can sometimes be.

While I don’t delude myself into believing I can change the world with my music, I want to share the emotions I experience with my songs and with this book, there was so much to share. While reading The Outlaw Ocean, I felt hopelessness from the laws of the sea that fail to adequately deliver justice. I experienced anger towards the crews of these criminal vessels. But I also felt hope at times, inspired by the characters in the book that show us how we can be better and do better when it comes to the ocean.

I tried to convey this pendulum of emotions — the hope and hopelessness, the brutality and the beauty, the prison and the freedom — in an effort to show the paradox of the ocean.
