Behind the Music

Music is most impactful when it is born from a strong sense of emotion around a narrative. Journalists and musicians are both storytellers, so the mixing of these art forms is something to be celebrated. The goal is for the music to give back to the project that created it. That project is the reporting of the moral and legal issues that affect our planet.

I often find inspiration in the world’s oceans. The vastness and the unknowns of the ocean, and the universe itself, always find their way into my mind when I am telling stories. This project that Ian has created gives voice to the tangible issues that damage not only the people on the ocean, but the seemingly boundless frontier itself. I find this really interesting, so I did my best to communicate through music what my words could not.

About Exclusion

Aidan Kennedy, better known by his stage name EXCLUSION, is a multi-genre music producer from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Since diving into music production in his early teenage years, he has been honing his skills to instill a mix of emotions into listeners by combining influences from classical orchestral, modern film scoring, and from a wide range of electronic music. Following successful results in the melodic-bass scene, the fan-favorite producer expanded his reach into the heavier, darker dubstep realm, gaining widespread attention and support from top headliners such as Squnto, Borgore, ATLiens, Kai Wachi, G-rex and TYNAN among others. EXCLUSION has proved himself to be more than capable when it comes to creating complex soundscapes and heavy dubstep bass-lines. There's no doubt that his skills will set into motion a longstanding goal for the young entrepreneur to become a household name.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
