Behind the Music

The convergence of hip-hip music and in-depth journalism present in The Outlaw Ocean music project is something I believe can be a strong force for change. There’s a sense of urgency present with Ian’s reporting in The Outlaw Ocean, specifically in chapters such as “Storming The Thunder” and “Jail Without Bars,” that I was drawn to and wanted to replicate in my tracks. With higher tempos and ultra-modern sounds, I hope my music implores to listeners the dire state of ocean crime, even if it does not directly affect their lives.

About drkmnd

Drkmnd is the alter ego of Callum Ward. The British producer's music is best described as bipolar — shifting between spacious, ambient instrumental pieces and dark, gritty beats, laced with dusty drums and thick basslines. He is also the producer-half of the underground hip-hop duo, DEATHLAB.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
