Behind the Music

Words sometimes have limits, but music is boundless — rapidly developing and evolving every day. I firmly believe that when a song comes from the heart, it can appeal to all other senses. Participating in The Outlaw Ocean Music Project and crafting tracks for true stories was a massive undertaking that enabled me to prove my abilities. It’s one I hope to continue doing for other mediums. But it was also a learning experience, both as a musician and as an individual in the world. I learned the importance of patience, perseverance in the face of adversity and a love of life. I also discovered that life can end in a very short amount of time and can be viewed as cheap to some — like venture capitalists — but a treasure to others.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
