Behind the Music

I am most interested in the chapters “Waste Away,” which discusses the pertinent topic of oil drilling, and “The Lone Patrol,” which makes me think about the ocean’s vastness and how little control we have over what is happening there. The lack of, or relaxed enforcement of, governing laws at sea allow crimes to be committed. It is eye-opening to learn about these stories from Ian’s perspective, and after reading the book, watching footage, and going through the sound archives, I question why more people aren’t talking about what is truly happening in our oceans. I hope that I can help others better understand the issues through my music, which I plan to infuse with a sense of sonder, self-reflection and sadness.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
