Storming the Thunder
“Storming the Thunder” is a story that we talked about a lot when discussing the project. Reading this chapter is a cinematic experience, but we have to remind ourselves that it does not describe fiction, but in fact a reality that is unknown to most people. Despite the bad actors in The Outlaw Ocean, there are people who are willing to commit their lives and risk almost everything to make things better. When thinking about the project, we discussed what these people’s paths look like and what drives them. This includes Ian, whose work enables us to hear this story in the first place.
To be honest, it was really tough at first for us to connect these topics with our sound, since almost all parts have quite depressing emotions. We took a step back and thought about how we can bring attention to these emotions and still catch the listener with our music. The result is three tracks, which take the listener on an emotional rollercoaster through the story of the hunt of Interpol’s most wanted poacher ship.
We are very thankful to have a job that brings people from all over the world together to dance, unite and forget everything for a moment. But with this, we want to encourage people to learn more about these widely unknown topics that require our attention. Every day we seem to get more shocking and depressing news that often leads to an overwhelming feeling of helplessness. Just like the group of people who are fighting to stop the crimes going on at sea, we want to encourage others to take action, even through small acts of spreading awareness or donating time or money to the cause. Or next time when someone is at a supermarket or a restaurant, they may question where the food they buy is actually from and the price that has been paid for it.
Music is made to be claimed by its listeners as their own. Connecting singular moments and feelings, it enables a collective tribe to lose itself in the moment. Township Rebellion is a collective that has been creating music and experiences since 2012.
