Behind the Music

“Jail Without Bars” is a heartbreaking chapter. It is hard to imagine how the conditions of people’s lives can be so terrible that they are driven to embark on perilous journeys, where they endure indifference, cruelty and terror. The stories of these mostly invisible, ordinary people are important, not because of their inherent sensationalism, but because they highlight the sad reality of people fleeing injustice, just to be met with more injustice. Through my music, I hope to bring these people’s stories to life while conveying the vastness and depth of the ocean.

About Televangel

Blue Sky Black Death is a name that pulses throughout the underground hip-hop community. The production duo is widely credited with being the architects of the popular “cloud rap” sound. Now, half of this innovative team is releasing boundary-pushing bodies of instrumental work under the alias TELEVANGEL. Much like the cinematic style he created with his partner Kingston in BSBD, TELEVANGEL combines haunting ambient sounds with atmospheric, melancholy arrangements and carefully-placed drums. The end result is more reminiscent of post-rock such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor than hip-hop.

The Journalism

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
