Behind the Music

Just as journalism is an important informational link between events happening in the world, art can also be a unique and impactful bridge to world issues. Art can champion, inform, entertain and advocate the same way works like The Outlaw Ocean do. You can see the passion behind music as the artist shares insight to their heart with the listeners, making the message even more powerful. Ian reports some fascinating stories, most of which the general public likely knows very little about. After reading the book, I felt torn on how to feel. The open ocean certainly seems otherworldly to me, and much of what I read was pretty horrifying. Ultimately it was these two sentiments I sought to emulate in my songs — this vast and ethereal ambiance, with not-so-subtle hints of tension and fear.

About Sonant

Led by tranquil strings, heartfelt piano and ethereal ambience, Sonant continues to create and develop an aural landscape with their growing discography. Interweaving subtlety with grandeur, there’s a creatively inspiring touch on the emotion, and the mystery, behind the music.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
