Behind the Music

Great art to me grabs your attention. It alerts you to a message, providing a deeper insight on something you might not have been previously aware of. That’s why I think this project is so interesting — this blending of music and journalism. Ian’s journalism enlightens the public, giving them information that can inform their decision making as well as increase the public’s understanding of those who suffer most from the seas. I can’t imagine the self-discipline and strain it took for Ian to write The Outlaw Ocean and alert the public to these matters. I wanted to create incredibly layered songs in order to communicate the complex emotions of the book — so that as you listen, your awareness grows, just like when reading The Outlaw Ocean. I hope that my tracks contribute to heightening that empathy.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
