Behind the Music

In “Jail Without Bars,” there lies a twisted beauty in the stowaways’ hopes and fantasies of a better life that somehow drive them in their journey. I want to create an atmosphere in my music that conveys this hope, and the peculiar beauty that comes with it. Inspired by the stowaways’ stories, I also try to reflect musically on the duality of the stowaways’ lives — in their inner world, there is hope and fantasy of a better future, but on the outside, there often comes a harsh reality and danger. This metaphor also fits for the ocean itself, as the ocean can be very quiet and peaceful at a deep level but loud and harsh at the surface level or on the outside. It’s this duality of the sea and the stories of the stowaways that make me reflect on certain topics like hope, social imbalance, fear, danger and the paradoxical connections between these topics.
