Behind the Music

Making the music for this project, I wanted to make the listeners feel what was going on in these stories. I think it’s really important to raise people’s awareness. There are some serious problems on the planet earth and projects like The Outlaw Ocean Music Project that implement this new approach to journalism are very necessary. I always try to tell stories through my music, so when Ian contacted me to do this, I was hooked. I completely agreed that the music itself would evoke all the feelings I wanted to transmit. When you think about words and music, both are powerful weapons, but sometimes music is able to make you feel things that words simply can’t. I focused a lot on putting myself in the place of the people Ian wrote about to understand how they felt and I tried to put all those emotions into my music. And I think it went pretty well. I called one of the tracks, “Deep End” because it’s a ballad which tries to express the feelings of sadness, injustice, isolation and the vastness of the ocean. Those were the feelings the chapter, “The Middleman” gave me, so I just tried to express this in the song. I was pleased with the final result.

I hope the music I created for this project will gain some visibility because it’s different from the music I usually produce. It’s always a pleasure to get out of my comfort zone and enjoy making different kinds of music.
