Behind the Music

Music provides a way for people to discover and break away from shared misunderstanding. I hope my music creates a sort of sailing vessel into the mystery and the vastness of the unchartered territory called the ocean and helps listeners shed light on the truths exposed by The Outlaw Ocean Project. Urbina's approach is genius. He understands that one finite medium is inadequate to tell the story. Through the harmonious combination of video, art, photographs, writing and now music, the reader and viewer delves deeper into the sea. Whether it be about the sea itself, or something even more personal, I hope this music is a guide that unlocks a sunken treasure of information.

On the face of it, the size and grandeur of the ocean was intimidating when creating my compositions. The process required a great deal of research. This “last untamed frontier” cannot be encapsulated by words alone. So, having a humble and open approach is key. More than just a large body of salt water, the sea connects us all and this project gives creatives from around the globe a front row view of this watery world. Through our musical exploration, perhaps we will find our common humanity.

About Matthew Mayer

No. 1 Billboard Charting New Age Recording Artist Matthew Mayer is both a Gold and Silver Parents' Choice Award Winning ambient pianist, performing solo piano concerts around the world. Mayer has gone from piano shows in his hometown South Dakota to sharing the stage with Croatia's most versatile musician today, Matej Mestrovic. His award-winning album, "Beautiful You," reached number one. Faith Salie of CBS Sunday Morning said, “Matthew Mayer provides the soundtrack of our household. My young kids have grown up listening to his gorgeous talent. When my 6-year-old hears it, he sighs, and whispers, ‘So soothing.’ But for me, it’s more than that: what I love most about Matthew Mayer’s music is that it, at once, stirs up emotions while offering peace. I feel an ache when I hear it.”
Mayer’s album, “Ardor” received rave reviews. One World Music Radio said, "One of the finest performances of solo piano you are likely to hear for an age." Mayer recently embarked on a Four-City Sold Out Croatia Tour in the National Theaters of Zagreb, Rijeka, Split and Varazdin, with Matej Mestrovic, Turkey's Hakan Ali Toker and Croatia's own Matija Dedic. His song, “Beyond” is ranked by Spain's “Reviews New Age Company” as one of the “Top 50 Piano Songs of All Time.” Matthew Mayer is a fellow solo piano advocate in the industry as the owner and founder of “SoloPiano.com.”

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
