Behind the Music

Normally I make music for myself or other people’s projects, crafting remixes and sound designs. With The Outlaw Ocean Music Project, I had an incredible book in front of me that provided inspiration on a whole new level. My ideas flowed quickly, proving to me how my mind connected with this whole project. My track “Lawlessness” was particularly different from what I normally do. I relied on a more narrative approach by assuming the perspective of three different characters to share their story. The product was so unique, that I had goosebumps while recording.

I wanted my tracks for this project to bring about awareness, while also inspiring a sense of hope. A lot of people don’t have any knowledge of what’s happening on the world’s oceans, and I strongly believe that spreading the word will help. I’d never heard of something like this before, and when Ian approached me about it I was immediately hooked by the idea alone. Innovative, new and creative ways of spreading information — like The Outlaw Ocean Music Project — can show people new paths and push that need for change. At the same time, I wanted to convey a hope for a better tomorrow as well. The music is set in a lower key — inspired by a melancholic phase experienced after reading the book — and so I hope those deep beats will offer an opportunity for listeners to ruminate and think about what they’ve learned and what’s in store for the future.

About Luca Musto

Where other artists rely on established formulas and resort to complacency, Luca Musto embodies the opposite. As a musician based in Berlin, he coalesces the city’s unique musical footprint with his own nuances and projects them into his music as a symphony of impressions.

Musto’s catalogue merges the resilience of modernity with authenticity, and the musical preferences of our generation with subtlety, so that it never feels like you’re listening to just another off-the-shelf product. Instead, it invokes in electronic music fans a feeling of familiarity and expertise, which is reflected in his creative sampling and rounded chord progressions. With each new release, the listener can’t help but notice that Musto doesn’t take his talent for granted, but as a basis for higher aspirations.

Those who are interested in a product that is not simply the result of artistic dedication, but a reflection of the artist’s soul cannot miss out on Luca Musto’s work.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
