Behind the Music

I recall taking a specific class about 10 years ago while studying law at the University of Ghent. It was named “Sea Law,” and I remember feeling astonished at the fact there were still places in the ocean devoid of law. At the time, I thought to myself: “Well, I’m sure someone is handling this issue and helping to prevent these injustices.” Now, after reading The Outlaw Ocean, I’ve come to see just a fraction of the lawlessness at sea and how it permeates into every facet of our lives. Ian’s dedication to this project and it’s message is inspiring. It compels me to help in shifting people’s perceptions of the ocean the same way Ian has for me with his reporting, as well as to mobilize people to enact change.

Growing up with ADHD, music has always served as a way to express feelings. When something preoccupied my mind, often the only way to stop thinking about it was to create songs that represented the emotion. It’s part of what makes me grateful to have people like Ian approaching me and saying they got inspired by my work. To me, music is a connection between the body and soul that can flood every sense and I’m excited to have the opportunity to use my creativity to immerse listeners in the world of The Outlaw Ocean.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
