Behind the Music
K. SparksMy approach to this project was very authentic and, above all, informative. I took a deep dive into Ian’s book, absorbing the tales in each chapter to get a full picture of these different people and places, and to get a better idea of the kinds of things they might encounter at sea. Overall, I found myself continually shocked by the barbarism that happens on the oceans — how people sneaking onto ships might encounter an end as brutal as being cast adrift at sea, and that pirates, something I had always thought only appeared in children’s books, still sail freely today.
As a musician, I’ve always tried to take abstract ideas and expand or expound upon them through song — using my platform of melodies and information to make it even broader. When people listen to these songs, I want them to be immersed in the world of The Outlaw Ocean. I really hope they feel the passion behind the music and the depth of these stories being told from different individual’s perspectives.

Sparks was raised by his parents in South Jamaica Queens, New York. They instilled the values of integrity and hard work within him. He started performing in various talent venues (artists showcases, spoken word lounges, music festivals) and created a buzz for himself within New York City. After releasing several projects and selling them independently, he began to record and write for numerous recording artists and shopping songs to various record labels. His music eventually caught the attention of DJ/Radio Personality Peter Rosenberg from Hot 97 in NYC, and Jenny Boom from Hot 93.7 in Connecticut, which generated radio play in both markets. K. Sparks proceeded to collaborate with fellow emcee, Kid Cudi to create his “Take Em High” single — which generated significant buzz within the blogosphere, increasing his popularity even more.
