Behind the Music

I was so truly moved by so many of the individuals in The Outlaw Ocean, it’s hard to know where to start. From Christopher Keays, to the Sea Shepherd crew to Ian himself, there was no shortage of brave individuals who put themselves in harms way to help their fellow humans or preserve the planet. As I read through the stories of each character, one of the most prevalent emotions I felt was a deep sadness and shame for humanity’s behavior. As such, I wanted to create an EP that characterized the bleakness of that shame and the imperativeness of these issues. At the same time, I tried to convey a sense of hope and urgency for action.

I strongly believe that music has the power to create change. I’ve always believed that instrumental songs are something that can be understood by everyone from all over the world, picking up where words leave off and conveying a meaningful message. With the support of the music community through this project, Ian’s courageous journalism will reach more people in a swift way. It’s imperative that society learns of these behaviors happening amid the ocean waves. I hope that by sharing my songs inspired by Ian’s book, I can in some small way support this search for more information and the crusade for change.

Jesse Brown
About Jesse Brown

Jesse Brown is a Canadian pianist, composer and recording artist alchemizing honest emotions into gentle recordings on his custom-felted Heintzman upright piano. Initially taught by his mother in his secluded village of Albertville in Canada's prairies, Jesse moved through life taking music with him from the front of the liquor store all the way to the front of the symphony. Many hours were spent creating musical backdrops for restaurant and lounge goers as a solo pianist, as well as spending time supporting others in clubs and jazz festivals.

You'll find Jesse's work on numerous Sonder House compilations, as well as collaborations with artists such as Somniacs, Jackson Love, Tom Merrall. Luis Álvarez, Summer Fallow, John Hayes, Andy Salvanos and Kyle McEvoy. Since Jesse's first ever editorial placement with Heart In The Right Place, he has since found the favour of Spotify editors with Teej, Crawl Spaces, Floating On Water and Notes From Tom. You'll now find Jesse's work on coveted Spotify editorial playlists like Peaceful Piano, Calm Vibes and Piano in the Background, among many others.

"Jesse Brown's neoclassical work is truly exceptional," said EarToTheGround Music. Jesse Brown's album Sadness was selected as one of the best albums of 2018.
"In the course of reviewing recorded and printed music, I sometimes come across a new artist who blows me away. Jesse Brown is one such artist," said mainlypiano.com.
