Behind the Music

Stories can be told in so many ways. Music is such a universal form of communication. Recorded music is omnipresent. Advances in technology have made it so messages expressed through music can reach millions of people instantaneously. The same thing goes for journalism, important stories that may have otherwise gone untold, can be shared widely, often creating an immediate impact.

Melding journalism with music is a natural fit. The informative and emotional powers of these mediums create a potent combination. The combination has vast potential for reaching large audiences. It is a symbiotic relationship, complimentary in communicating messages through information, emotion, atmosphere and mood. I believe the combination is perfect for a project as expansive and important as this.

There were many factors that appealed to me about this project. One that stood out was the power of people’s stories. To hear about the struggles and hardships many of these people face was extremely eye-opening and emotive.

As a musician who primarily creates instrumental music, I spend so much time focusing on tone, space, emotion and mood. Song concepts can be abstract and open to interpretation. To get a chance to draw direct inspiration from the sheer power of these people’s stories was a special opportunity.

I'm so honored to be a part of this project. Helping bring attention to such important and, for many people, under-the-radar issues is a special opportunity. If my music can help, in any way, to accomplish these goals, then I am truly honored to play my part. Ian's work has been impactful beyond words, and I am very excited to see it continue.
