My first exposure to Ian and his work was through watching some of his videos. One story that I found especially powerful was in his reporting from Indonesia in which Ian delved into the complexity of ocean borders against the backdrop of conflicts between Indonesia and Vietnam. It was a surreal story to engage with, particularly when what should have been a routine run with the Indonesian Marine Patrol turned into a tense encounter with the Vietnamese Coast Guard that Ian had to help negotiate. It was a high-stakes situation that had me on the edge of my seat and highlights the pressing issues on the seas, which was something that drew me to the project.
As an artist, I’ve never been presented with an opportunity such as this — to get to “use music to empower storytelling,” as Ian put it when he first approached me with the project. It is exciting to create music for a cause like this in an effort to affect change in the future.
