Behind the Music

Reading The Outlaw Ocean and having had the opportunity to write songs inspired by the book has been a journey into the depths of my soul. There were many parts of the book that impacted me, but one of my favorites has to be chapter nine, “The Next Frontier.” In this chapter in particular, Ian displays remarkable reporting in the way he exhibits the issues at hand and how he pulls the reader into this world through his own eyes. All the while, he strikes a perfect balance in illustrating the duality of the sea, sometimes highlighting its romantic characteristics and then other times shedding light on topics in a mercilessly direct way. It’s a work of writing art I highly recommend, and in fact have already done so and will continue to do so.

This kind of journalism is so vital. It offers a unique and accurate depiction of something not often thought of. It’s essential that people confront these problems. What I want to translate with these songs is the opportunity for a listener to travel through various feelings via a musical landscape that mirrors the motions of the sea — its waves and colors, its tempests and placidity. I hope, through hearing my music, listeners can gain a sense of all the emotions the ocean can inspire from anger to restlessness to hope.

The Journalism

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
