Behind the Music

Ian’s work brings awareness to a lot of serious issues. If my music can contribute to that, I'm happy to be a part of it.

I am an obscure artist, and I operate in my own little world out here. Ian reaching out and asking me to join this kind of project was really interesting. It’s really refreshing to work on something like this.

Like anything I do or make, I just hope my work can impact someone in a positive way. I love music and so many artists have enriched my life with their music. I hope I can do the same for someone else someday.

About Fitz Ambro$e

Fitz Ambro$e is a Tokyo-based producer originally hailing from Cape Breton Island in a remote area of Nova Scotia, Canada. A beat maker with deep roots in ‘80s soul and funk, and ‘90s hip-hop and RnB, Fitz creates stripped-down hip-hop filled with various intricacies and obscure progressions.

The swaggering, popping grooves gel each minimal production together to form tracks busting with trademarked flavor and culture. Throughout his career he has connected with a diverse range of collaborators and supporters including Tokyo's Jazzy Sport crew. Fitz has crafted a uniquely modern sound with a deep individual vision.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
