Behind the Music

Growing up, my grandpa would take me sailing along the west coast of British Columbia. These memories inspired a deep connection to the ocean, which is why one of the biggest inspirations for this EP was my own personal journey of conscious growth that I went through over the course of my time working on The Outlaw Ocean Music Project. Collaborating with Ian and being exposed to his reporting expanded my world view. I learned the ocean can serve as a mirror for humanity, reflecting back the sometimes devastating impacts of the choices we make. It prompted me to ask some difficult questions: How am I impacting the planet and more specifically the ocean? What effects do my everyday choices have on the sustainability of Earth’s resources?

Storytelling can take place across a multitude of mediums, each with its own level of resonance. When a single project like The Outlaw Ocean Music Project can allow different threads of artistic expression to come together, the product is something transformative. Working on this project truly showed me the competing contrasts of light and darkness on the high seas, which I wanted to expose others to as well. The creation of the Underworld EP was an exercise in and manifestation of my own self-reflection, as well as the hope I have for the future.

This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
