Behind the Music

It is hard to pick a chapter or story that moved me the most. I was drawn into how Ian immersed himself into such a threatening environment so that he could show his readers how complex the issues of lawlessness on the high seas are. I can only imagine the truths he discovered about not only the situations he reported on but himself. As a traveling man, I can only assume that his voyages were both adventurous and humbling experiences. Upon reading The Outlaw Ocean, I felt a strong urge to bring the listeners as close to his point of view as possible through my music.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
