Behind the Music

The extent of human greed and cruelty knows no limits, and Ian’s words in The Outlaw Ocean is proof of that fact. The interview with the stowaway, the stories from those risking their lives in pursuit of a better future — it’s all so powerful and eye-opening. Putting music and words together to portray this harsh reality completely unknown to most (myself included) creates a strong emotional experience no one can ignore and that drives change.

This is the first time I’ve composed music based on a book, and it’s an interesting creative path I hope to take again in the future. I was so inspired as I ventured through the rousing world of The Outlaw Ocean Project, and I’m so glad to have played a part in a work as innovative as this.
