Behind the Music

To me, The Outlaw Ocean is an extensive body of work featuring individual stories that are distinct, but also connect to form a narrative on the current state of our oceans. There are so many different topics the book explores and a variety of emotions felt as one reads it. I tried to connect my tracks to the many visual impressions the ocean has — the calming lull of waves and the beauty of seemingly never-ending horizons, contrasted with feelings of violence and cruelty brought by the more unsavory characters of the sea. Through my key techniques of using different synth and piano lines, I want to capture the essence of steady yet orderly chaos that characterizes the oceans.

About B-Side

“Music always has to touch the soul” is the slogan for B-Side's warm and cozy beats. The moods he creates try to express feelings without using words. From a bedroom producer, he has become a multi-million streamed Spotify artist. Still trying to keep his warm sound creating chillhop-related productions, he steadily tries to elevate. The journey is the reward.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
