Behind the Music

It’s heartwarming to know that true, unbiased reporting still exists. We need more journalists like Ian out there reporting on what really matters, not on which jacket the next big celebrity will be wearing. I will always support non-profit organizations that keep honest journalism and important matters alive.

Right now, I feel that honest journalism is of the utmost essence. Now more than ever, we are living in a biased world that is trying to force false information upon us. What Ian and his team have been doing is applaudable to say the least. Traveling across the seven seas, he has managed to bring to the forefront matters that deserve way more attention than they are getting right now.

The music project will have a larger impact on the average reader because it brings in a much broader audience that would be captivated by this narrative sonic adventure. Upon receiving audio files and sound bites from Ian’s reporting, I immediately knew I wanted to hop on board and contribute my own musical compositions. Initially, I thought that no more than two tracks would make it to the final stages. I was trying to make something very unique by blending real-life sound files with abstract soundscapes and lush atmospheres of a distant world we were once so keen to preserve.

About Aurora B. Polaris

Daniel Coscarella, known as Aurora B.Polaris, formerly Aurora Borealis, is an audio engineer and music producer. Listening to multiple genres of music has led him to focus on some of the chiller types of sound. This includes genres that can be defined as chillstep, ambient, future garage, wave, electronica, lo-fi and future bass. That doesn't mean his taste in music stops there. His passion for the harder styles of music allows him to implement elements from hardstyle, hardcore, metal and more. Having a background in drums, his tracks tend to focus and spotlight the drum pattern, the groove, the heavy hitting kick and snare. He also combines percussion and foley sound to embrace the underlying drum loop as a whole. During the last few years, Aurora B.Polaris has slowly earned the trust and reputation of multiple Youtube channels and audio engineers worldwide. This has made it possible for him to be featured on leading chill channels such as AirwaveMusicTV, Ambient, Arctic Empire, Diversity, Fluidified, Mixhound, MrOtterMusic, nourish and Pulse8. His music has also been featured on SPACE & UNIVERSE live streams, which is affiliated with NASA and SpaceX, and on SiriusXM Satellite Radio, an American broadcasting radio company.

The Journalism behind the Music

All music in this project is based on The Outlaw Ocean, a New York Times Best-Selling book by Ian Urbina that chronicles lawlessness at sea around the world. This reporting touches on a diversity of abuses ranging from illegal and overfishing, arms trafficking at sea, human slavery, gun running, intentional dumping, murder of stowaways, thievery of ships and other topics.
